Learning Reflection

Learning Reflection


In this course “English Reading Strategies (1551108)” I studied with Dr.Usa Noytim. I’ve learned many topic. There are A healthy diet, Natural disaster/News stories/Today’s technology/Fashion/West meets east/locating information/Extensive reading/paragraph reading strategies.  

Throughout the study in this course is learning about the strategies that useful to read in English such as

Skimming: the process of reading only main ideas within a passage to get an overall impression of the content of a reading selection.


Scanning: reading technique to be used when you want to find specific information quickly. In scanning you have a question in your mind and you read a passage only to find the answer, ignoring unrelated information.


Guessing meaning from context: this means work out what it means (or have a good guess at least) from the words that are around it and from the topic of the paragraph.


Previewing: preview a text before starting to read, in order to orient yourself toward what is important for you in this reading.

 In fact, there are many strategies can help you easy to understand what we read and to read every words or read all of the text. It wastes the time so much.


Sometime it is hard to understand in some point because it’s too difficult for me such as difficult words. It really makes me confused so I ask friends or look for the definition of each word from dictionary. The one of my problem is when I have to summarize the text. It’s too difficult for me. I read and understand the text but I can’t summarize it in my own word but I tried to do it so hard. I enjoy working in group because we can work together and also practice speaking skill with friends.


These strategies it’s very useful for me. I can use it when I read in English even read in Thai. It can help me easier to understand but no need to read all the text.



Throughout the study in this course I’ve learned a lot. Not only the strategies that I’ve learned but also the best experiences that the teacher is always share with us. She is my inspiration to study in English and study abroad like her.



I want to say thank you  a million times for everything that you taught us. You always told us what is properly or not to behave because we’re going to be an English teacher in the future. You are my role model to be a good teacher.


In my opinion this course is very valuable because I can use it in my daily life when I read news. Text books, advertises etc. This subject not only improved my reading skill but also writing skill ass well because we have to write on Blogger every week.

I have nothing to say to you besides thank you for everything and see you next semester.

Classic Ann Landers

On Monday 14th November 2016, the last class of this semester .I arrived at classroom around 08.20 am and the teacher came to class at 08.30 am. She is always punctual. Then she checked the name list to know that who absent on that day and gave our works “Healthy Diet” back to us. After that, she gave us new sheet “Classic Ann Landers”


Landers, Ann (4 July 1918-22 June 2002), syndicated columnist, was the pen name of Esther Pauline Lederer, who was born in Sioux City, Iowa, to Abraham B. Friedman, a peddler, and Rebecca Rushall. Her parents, Jews who had fled persecution in Russia, had immigrated to the United States ten years earlier. Beginning as a chicken peddler, Abraham Friedman, an astute businessman, saw an opportunity to make money in the up-and-coming movie industry and became an exhibitor and distributor. He eventually owned a chain of theaters in three midwestern states and became one of the first movie-house operators to sell popcorn. In later life Eppie, as Esther was affectionately nicknamed, often said that her stable midwestern upbringing provided her with the basis for a happy life.


The teacher let us known about Biography of Ann Landers after that, she let us read and did the exercise –match the each letter with correctly responds. I read and try to do it by myself and checked the answer with my friends after I’ve finished. After finishing, teacher gave us corrective feedback and explained us each text mean. We read and analyzed each letter together. After finishing that exercise, she told us to do another exercise. We have to answer each question about What’s her advice?  What’s the problem?  Why did they write the letter to Ann? After that, she gave us corrective feedback after we’ve finished by ourselves


Next exercise is read the letter that it was sent to Ann and tried to write the respond and gave them the advice. She told us to work in group of three people. My group are Natthaphon, Kittikarn and me. We worked together and sent Natthaphon as a representative of our group to shared our opinion to friends.
After we have finishing study, we have to take a quiz about unit 5 – 7 and then let’s go to have lunch.

Today the exercises was easy but the quiz made me very nervous because it too difficult. In fact I known the definition of each words but I can’t place it correctly in vocabulary part. I’ve finished on time but I’m not sure about my answer. I think I have to improve myself if I don’t want to fail the exam so I have to learn a lot about vocabulary and understand how to place each word correctly.  I have to read more in English.

The strategies that I’ve use today are guessing words meaning from the context and skimming  

I feel very serious with the exam but in the class today is fun because the exercise not to difficult and I’ve work with my friends we can talked and analyzed together.

paragraph reading strategies "Books and Novels"

On Monday 7th November 2016
I went to class around 8.20 am. And Teacher came to class at 8.30 am. She is always punctual. First of all, check that who present or absent today and then she gave us new sheet, let us did exercises and show us the books that it appeared on our sheet.
After that, She let us answered the questions. We have to read all information as fast as we can to answer the questions.

taught us to pronounce each word correctly.

After finishing, she asked us to write summary of each paragraph and wrote it on the board after we came back from break. We had 15 minutes to break at 10.30 am.

We worked in group and wrote the summary on the board and we read and did a lot of exercises.


Nothing easy everything is difficult because there are a lot of difficult words and we had to read a lot and get main idea. I think it too difficult for me but I solve the problem by asked the teacher and talked with friends. It made me understood more than I read alone.
The strategies that I’ve used today is skimming and scanning.

Today I feel sleepy and hungry. This class is too long four hours.

Read Faster

On Monday 31st October 2016
At 8.30 am. Teacher came to class and checked that that who present or absent.
First of all, Teacher used Cambridge Dictionary online to teach us how to pronounce each word correctly.

The words that I’ve learned are...
Accurate (adj.): correct, exact, and without any mistakes
Accuracy (n.): the fact of being exact or correct
Reluctant (adj.): not willing to do something and therefore slow to do it
Approach (v.): to come near or nearer to something or someone in space, time, quality, or amount
Effective (adj.): successful or achieving the results that you want
Consistent (adj.): always behaving or happening in a similar, especially positive, way
Acquire (v.): to get something
MBA:  Master of Business Administration: an advanced degree in business, or a person who has this degree
BEd: Bachelor of Education: a degree taken by some teachers, or a person who has this degree
PhD:  doctor of philosophy: the highest college or university degree, or someone who has this


After that, she told us to check homework’s answer with friends and then she gave us a corrective feedback.

After finishing, teacher let us write note and spoke with friend about
1. How do you improve English skills? and 2. How do you read in English?
 This is my answer that I’ve written.

          “I watched English movies a lot for improve my listening and speaking skills then I read in English and usually write on Web Blog. It makes me improve writing skill
          When I read in English I used many strategies that I’ve learned in this class. The strategies that I usually use are skimming and scanning. Initially, I read and don’t stop and find out the definition on dictionary when I find difficult words. I just read to get main idea of the text. I don’t read every words because it takes time a lot.” And then read the note that we write to friend who sat next to.
Next Question is “What are obstacles to faster reading?”
Obstacle (n.): something that blocks you so that movement, going forward, or action is prevented or made more difficult
        
For me I think that difficult words that I can’t guess from the context. It makes me read slower. Sometimes noise environment make me confuse when I read.

Teacher let us answer the question that you agree or disagree about faster reading and answer by our opinion. And then she gave us new handout “Faster Reading”. We read in sheet and did exercises.

At 10.25 am. It’s time to break and came back to class 10.40 am.
 When we all back to class teacher gave us a corrective feedback. And continued did exercises.

The strategies that I’ve used today are Scanning, Skimming and guessing words meaning from the context.

Today’s lesson I think It isn’t too difficult but it  isn’t too easy as well. We have to read faster and get the main idea of each text. Sometimes I can understand all the text but sometimes there are some points  that I don’t understand. I felt sleepy and hungry because this class too long sometimes it make me felt bored.

Extensive Reading

On Monday October 17th, 2016
Today I went to class 8.32 a.m. so I’m late two minutes. It’s the first time that I went to class late but next time I won’t late.
First of all, teacher checked name list and told us the mid-term test scores. I got 16/20 but next test I will try harder. And then she explained about project work and examination schedule for us to review the lesson and get ready to “Final Test”.
Today we have started the new lesson “Extensive Reading”
Teacher let us talked about the meaning of this word and talked with partner who sat next to us.
First of all, teacher asked us the question “Do you often read in English for your private study?”
IF “Yes” what is the way that you use 1.Internet, 2.Magazine, 3.Books or 4.Study books. She let us talked with partner.
The way that I use to read in English for my private study is “Internet”. I use my phone to read in English so it is easy way to read.
Teacher shared her experience about her studying. She is my inspiration. I want to be like her. I want to study abroad and I want to have a good career like her.

After that, teacher gave us new handout “Extensive reading” and let us thing the words relate to “Research” and wrote on the board.


Extensive reading = simply reading a lot of English (reading almost every day) but it not too difficult because it will make you bored and you can understand the text without needing a dictionary.
After that, we started reading in handout, summarize each paragraph and answered the questions and she provides corrective feedback.

Teachers always use http://dictionary.cambridge.org/to teach us how to pronounce each word correctly.

The strategies that I’ve used today were finding the references, making inferences and scanning.

Nothing was easy today because text was academic so there were a lot of difficult words and also difficult to understand. I felt sleepy because the class took long time and the weather quite cold.

Scanning

On October 10, 2016 I came to classroom around 8.10 am. There was a blackout at that building. I felt very hot and it’s available again around 9.20 am. Teacher came to classroom at 8.30 am. She is always punctual. She gave us a new handout. The new lesson was “Scanning”

Scanning = A type of speed reading technique which is used when you want to find specific information without necessarily understanding the rest of the text or passage.


First of all, teacher let us started reading and answered the question by used the keywords and then located it. After finishing, she let us worked in group of five. She told us to read the information and answered by used scanning skill to make it faster.

Not only worked in group but teacher let us do the exercise by ourselves and noticed that it’s faster or not. The first exercise my group spent seven minutes but for the second exercise we spent just only three minutes. Wow! it’s faster.

and then had a break for fifty minutes and back to classroom at 10.45 am.


After break, teacher let us do the exercise again it’s about “Flight Information” and teacher show us how to book the ticket online.


Teacher assigned us the project work. It was four new stories that we have to write summary of news and handed to her on 31 October 2016.

Today we did a lot of exercise and the strategy that we used today was SCANNING.
I like this lesson because we did a lot of exercise to practice scanning skill and this subject not too difficult. It’s made me enjoy when I did exercise and found the answer by scanning.

West meets East (continued)

On Monday October 3, 2016 I went to class earlier than other day because I wanted to check the answer of homework in handout with my friends. At 8.30 am. Teachers came to class, told us the quiz score and also checked name list in the same time. Then she let us checked answer with friends who sat next to us or behind us. After that, teacher let us continued reading and the exercise in handout. We took a break at 10.15 am.

After break, teacher let we spoke about produce, foods, celebrities that we like in Asian country . So celebrity that I like is Dan Worrawech Danuwong because of his smile and ability such as singer, actor and director.

The food that I like is Thai foods. I love Thai foods the most because I think it’s more than delicious than others.
After finishing, she let us did exercise about part of speech and then made question about “When foreigner living in your country. What the question that you want to ask him or her?” and shared with friends. These are the question that I want to ask him or her.
                                              Where do you from?
                                              What’s your name?
                                              Have you been to Thailand before?
                                              How long have you stayed in here?
                                             Which place in Thailand do you like?
                                             Do you like the weather in Thailand?
                                             What’s Thai food that you like?

After that, we started reading in handout again and did exercise together.
The strategies that I used today was guessing words meaning from the context, predicting, finding the references, making inferences and teacher always use http://dictionary.cambridge.org/ to tough us how to pronounce correctly.

Sometime I felt bored and sleep because this class is too long 4 hours


Today’s lesson I think it was quite difficult because it difficult to understood each paragraph and I had to analyze it. I know that I’m not good at reading  but I will try hard to good at it and I will practice more and more. I like that time when teacher let us talked with partner or work in group. We can talk in English It mean we can practice speaking and made me more confident to speak.
