Learning Reflection in a Discourse Approach in Reading





Throughout this course we have learned lots about genres of the text and discourse markers and acquired lots of knowledge as follows

  
Chapter 1: Recount
To tell what happened in the past. There are three types Personal Recount, Factual Recount and Imaginative Recount.


Chapter  2: Narrative
To entertain the reader and make them imagine about the story that they were reading. And this lesson I have learned the story Secrets about a little girl with her secrets. Teacher let us read and explained for us and teacher assigned us to worked in group of three to make a story book about this story.

Chapter 3: Descriptive
To describe thing, person or place so I have chances a lot to described things, animals and places, and did lots of exercises.


Chapter  4: Procedure
To tell us how something is done through a step or a sequence of action. And this lesson teacher assigned us to make a cooking video and presented the video in front of the class. So this is my cooking video and I worked with Kittikarn, we cooked Canned Fish Hot and Spicy Soup.



Chapter  5: Comparison & Contrast
To compare two or more things or both similarities and differences and there are some important words, we called discourse markers to show similarities and differences.

To show how the facts result due to other fact and there are some words that we can notice when we read the text and we can realized that are cause or effect for example cause, result, factor, reason,  
to blame, to force

    In this lesson we did lots of exercises and also wrote the diagram about cause and effect related to the text that we read.



   Chapter  7: Definition and Classification
   This lesson helps us when we read academic English because we will meet lots of the technical words and different types of the text. We can notice their definition or type from some words as follow

    i.e., in other word or to refer to
   These are definition markers



    kind, type or to group
   These are classification markers

    
   Chapter 8: Exemplification
   The writers use this when they want to add more detail to explain something and we will understand clearly. So we can notice from these words as follow

     e.g. = foe example   
     viz = it is
     here are a few examples


     Chapter 9: Problem and Solution
    It’s a pattern of organization where information in the text is express as a problem or solution. Of course, there are the discourse markers to make us understand the text where the problem and solution.
   

    Problem markers

-   crisis
-   obstacle

-    to resolve
-    to tackle
-    remedy


     
So that’s all chapters that I have learned this course.


  For me the difficult things are writing about the main idea or summarize the text by using my own words but I can do it however I need the time but I always tried my best when I did the exercises and the way I solved the problem is checked the answer with my friends and asked them why them answer like that. And another difficult thing for me is the difficult words that I never known before but I solved it by trying to find the definition from the context or using dictionary online.





        In my opinion this course is one of my favorite course because our teacher Dr.Usa is very kind for us (If we didn’t talk too much, came to class late, uniform is impolite, break the rules or something like that) I want to say thank you for you for a million times that you taught us a lot not only in the lesson but also the life skills or how to behave suitably because we are going to be an English teacher in the future.

                              

  
  
  You are my role model to be a good English teacher and studying abroad. 
   I really want to be like you. I want to study abroad and have a good career. Thank you to suggest us way to success and everything you did for us.

                       

   And I want to say sorry that sometimes we talked too much and made you upset with us or didn’t do homework that you assigned us. I’m really sorry teacher.

    Unfortunately, my junior (first year student and next the gen) won’t have a good chance to study with you. I think they miss the big chance.

Problem and Solution (continued)

On Monday May 1, 2017


Today was the end of this course so nothing much today just did exercise and presented cooking videos of each group.


First, teacher let us did exercise in our handout. It was about problem and solution so we have to read and analyzed what is the problem or solution, and then wrote the title, main idea and diagram about the text that we read.

After finishing, teacher told us to checked the answer with friends and gave us the corrective feedback and let us wrote the answer on the board in front of the class.


After that, it was the time to show our cooking videos but I already shown my video last week so this week, I just only watched the rest of the video of my friends.


The foods that my friends cooked were different such as

Shrimp Fried Rice


Stir Fired Macaroni with Prawn


Spicy Fried Eggs Salad


Spicy Chicken Soup


Spicy Spaghetti with Ham and Bacon

Ground Pork Salad

 But there were some groups cooked the menus that I never thought before that we can eat that food but they did for example Fried Rice with Taro and Ichiton Green Tea.

In my opinion today was very fun for me especially, the cooking video. They made me laughed a lot. But the exercises that I did was wrong maybe I don’t understand clearly but I solved the problem by editing when the teacher gave us the corrective feedback or checked the answer with friends.
